AMBOSS empowers clinicians to earn and redeem continuing education credit as they learn. In most cases, these credits are awarded in the form of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™; for Australian users reading articles, they are awarded in the form of CPD hours. The process for submitting AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ and converting them to CPD points/credits/hours depends on the requirements of your local medical council, accrediting body, or regulatory authority.
This guide provides country-specific instructions for how to track, download, and submit your CPD certificates. We plan to continue adding countries to the list on this page, so please check back periodically. You may also find it useful to refer to this list of countries that accept ACCME-accredited CME.
Since credit requirements vary per organization, we recommend consulting your specific accrediting body for the most accurate information on which credits they accept. For technical issues like downloading your certificate, our team is here to help at hello@amboss.com.
A Quick Note on Terminology
Throughout the AMBOSS platform, you will see the term CME (Continuing Medical Education). This terminology is used as AMBOSS’s international standard and is fully equivalent to CPD (Continuing Professional Development).
Australia
Earning and claiming CPD for reading articles
Step 1: Read CPD-eligible AMBOSS articles
You can earn CPD hours by reading articles that are certified for continuing education. For every CPD-certified AMBOSS article you read, you can earn 0.5 CPD hours.
The system automatically tracks your reading time, and once completed, you will be able to download a certificate confirming your earned hours.
You can find all CPD-eligible articles directly in the AMBOSS platform by heading to Learning > Library > CME eligible articles.
Step 2: Track your progress and claim your CPD hours
AMBOSS automatically tracks your learning activity once you start reading an eligible article.
You can access your CME activity as follows:
- Click the Profile icon in the top right > View your CME page.
- You will need to fill out your personal information for your CME Profile if you have not done so already. Important: Under the section “CME/CPD/CE Credit Type,” choose “AHPRA (Australia).”
- Under your profile, you will see 4 activities listed:
- Internet Point of Care CME
- Family Medicine Board Review CME
- Internal Medicine Board Review CME
- Pediatrics Board Review CME - Click “Claim hours” at the bottom right of the Internet Point of Care CME activity.
- You will see three tabs. In the “For review” tab, you will see a list of the searches on AMBOSS that brought you to a CPD-eligible article, with the date of the search.
If you read the information in the article to try to answer your clinical question, click “Review for 0.5 hours.” - A pop-up box will appear with two questions about the goal and the result of your search. Answer the questions, click “Add”, and the search entry will disappear from the list in the “For review” tab and will appear in the “To claim” tab, with the date that you reviewed it. There, you can click as many searches at one time as you wish to claim, and click “Claim hours” at the bottom right.
Before clicking “Claim hours”, please make sure that all of your profile information is correct, including that you have selected “AHPRA (Australia)” as your CME/CPD/CE Credit Type.
- A pop-up box will appear with some brief post-activity evaluation questions. Answer the questions, and click “Submit.”
- The search entry will then disappear from the list in the “To claim” tab and will appear in the "Claimed" tab, with the date that it was claimed. You will see the tag “Not submitted” on your submission, which simply means there was no automatic submission to a US medical board. You will also see an option to download a PDF that certifies your credit. Download and save the PDF certificate.
How long do I have to claim my CPD hours?
You can claim your CPD hours for up to two years from the end of the year in which you earned them. For example, if you earned CPD hours in September 2024, you have until December 31, 2026, to claim them.
Submitting CPD
Upload your certificate for verification through one of the following options:
- Option 1: AMA CPD Home: Upload your certificate to AMA CPD Home for verification.
- Option 2: Australian Medical Association: Alternatively, you can report your CPD hours through the Australian Medical Association (AMA).
Europe
The AMA has an agreement in place with the European Union of Medical Specialties (UEMS) that allows physicians from these European countries to convert AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ into EACCME credits, which is the type that is recognized by the UEMS. International physicians interested in converting AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ to EACCME credit should contact the UEMS.

Template message:
Good day,
I recently completed an article and associated MCQs on the AMBOSS platform, which is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). As per the ACCME website (https://accme.org/about-accreditation/countries-accepting-accme-accredited-cme/), ACCME-accredited activities are recognised by the HPCSA for CPD purposes.
I have therefore submitted [YOUR NUMBER OF POINTS] CME points for HPCSA CPD conversion. Kindly note that this is not a duplication request, as this certificate has been submitted solely by me and not by the provider (AMBOSS SE) since the agreement is through ACCME.
For context, I have colleagues who previously successfully had CPD points allocated through this same medium (AMBOSS), and I would greatly appreciate your assistance with processing this current submission.
Thank you very much for your time and support. I look forward to confirmation of processing.
With gratitude,
Dr [YOUR NAME]
