Internet Point-of-Care

• Purpose: To promote the professional development of clinicians and provide support for clinical decision-making.
• Educational objective: Clinicians will be able to formulate a clinical question, locate and critically evaluate evidence-based information to answer the question, and apply this information to various aspects of patient care and management, including the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of a range of diseases and disorders.
• Target audience: Currently practicing clinicians, across various clinical and academic settings internationally.
• Funding source: None
• Content: CME content is developed by a team of physician authors and editors in a standardized process that includes multi-stage peer review. The research sources that are used include updated best practice guidelines and expert recommendations, are adherent to accepted standards of scientific evidence, and are fully referenced. Content is free of bias and adheres to the ACCME’s Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education as it relates to commercial bias (see here).
• Activity type: CME is offered for eligible articles in the format of an Internet Point-of-Care activity (also known as an “Internet searching and learning” activity), in which the learner self-identifies a particular clinical question or problem, and accesses AMBOSS CME content to search for an answer. The learner then completes a brief survey in which they are asked to identify their initial question and report the impact on their practice of any information learned.
• Method of participation
  • Log in to your AMBOSS account.
  • Ensure you are either:
    • Accessing the Clinical Care tab (regardless of your profile or Study Objective settings).
    • Accessing the Learning tab and your Study Objective is set to one of the following:
      • A specialty board exam.
      • CME for different post-graduate professional roles.
      • USMLE Step 3.
      • COMLEX Level 3.
  • Important: You CANNOT earn CME credits in the Learning tab if your Study Objective does not match any of the above-mentioned ones.
  • In the search box, type a term related to a clinical question, and either select one of the article suggestions that pops up, or press Enter, and select an article from the list of search results.
  • If the article you select is CME-eligible (i.e., it is on the list in our CME library, which is continually updated), and you read content in the article to answer your clinical question, you will be able to earn CME credit for that activity. Follow the subsequent steps on this page to complete a brief evaluation regarding the information you learned, and redeem your credit. (Please note that currently, articles that you read on our mobile app will count towards CME, but you must be on a web browser in order to complete the evaluation and redeem credit.)

AMBOSS originally developed this activity in April 2022. It is renewed and released annually, with updates made as appropriate.

In order to receive a Certificate of Credit (physicians) or a Certificate of Participation (non-physicians) for participation in this activity, learners must complete the evaluation and submit a request for credit.

The evaluation and credit submission request can be accessed at the conclusion of the course on your CME page via https://www.amboss.com/us.

You can access your CME activity as follows:

1. Click the Profile icon in the top right > View your CME page. You will need to fill out your personal information for your CME Profile if you have not done so already.
2. Under your profile, you will see 4 activities listed:
   - Internet Point of Care CME
   - Family Medicine Board Review CME
   - Internal Medicine Board Review CME
   - Pediatrics Board Review CME
3. Click “Claim credits” at the bottom right of the Internet Point of Care CME activity.
4. You will see three tabs. In the “For review” tab, you will see a list of the searches on AMBOSS that brought you to a CME-eligible article, with the date of the search.
   
   If you read the information in the article to try to answer your clinical question, click “Review for 0.5 credits.” 
5. A pop-up box will appear with two questions about the goal and the result of your search. Answer the questions, click “Add”, and the search entry will disappear from the list in the “For review” tab and will appear in the “To claim” tab, with the date that you reviewed it. There, you can click as many searches at one time as you wish to claim, and click “Claim credits” at the bottom right. 

Before clicking “Claim credits”, please make sure that all of your profile information is correct.

4.  A pop-up box will appear with some brief post-activity evaluation questions. Answer the questions, and click “Submit.”
5. The search entry will then disappear from the list in the “To claim” tab and will appear in the "Claimed" tab, with the date that it was claimed. You will see one of the following tags on the search entry: 

• Submitted: the credit was successfully submitted to the board listed in your profile
• Rejected: the credit was unsuccessfully submitted to the board listed in your profile
• Not submitted: there was no board listed in your profile.

You will also see an option to download a PDF that certifies your credit.

Can you redeem credit twice for reading the same article?

Yes. The credit is given based on the searching and learning activity. So if you search for one question about e.g.: heart failure in the morning, and another question about heart failure in the afternoon, you would get 0.5 credits for each search. 

Please note: The American Board of Anesthesiology does not accept multiple credit submissions for the same activity in one day. Although you can perform searches multiple times in one day, if you want to receive credit for each one, you should review each search on your CME page on a different day. 

Can every article on AMBOSS be counted for Point-of-Care CME?

We hope that one day, all articles for clinicians will be eligible for CME credit. However, at the moment, only the articles listed in our CME library will be eligible for CME credit. This means if you search for a term that brings you to one of these articles, and use the information in that article to answer a clinical question, you can receive credit for that search.
