Here are some problems you might encounter when using the AMBOSS add-on for Anki, and how to troubleshoot them.
The add-on doesn't work with my Anki (no pop-up, no underlined phrases)
Firstly, it is important to check a few things to make sure that the add-on is configured properly on your device:
* Have you restarted Anki after installing or updating the add-on? Any changes made to our add-on will be applied only once the Anki is restarted.
* Have you logged into your AMBOSS account within Anki? Once the add-on is installed you will need to log in via the AMBOSS > Log in... option found in the Anki taskbar (top part of the screen). You might need to repeat this process after updating the add-on.
* Are the relevant options enabled in the Add-on settings screen? Please make sure that the following options are ticked:
Enable pop-up definitions
Show pop-up definitions on questions
You can access add-on settings by clicking on AMBOSS > Settings... within Anki. The add-on configuration can always be reset by pressing the Restore Defaults button in the Settings menu.
What to do if the steps listed above didn't help?
You might be using an Alternate version of Anki which is currently not supported by our add-on. In this case, you need to remove it from your device and install the Standard versions which you can download here.
You can easily check which version of Anki you have by opening Anki and clicking on AMBOSS > About > Debug. Look for the "flavor" value;
* "flavor": "standard" for Standard Anki builds
* "flavor": "alternate" for Alternate Anki builds
If you are still experiencing issues or you can't see the "flavor" field in the Debug section, send us a message through the Support button.
I can't log in to my AMBOSS account in Anki
This might happen if you downloaded one of the unoffical AMBOSS Anki add-ons from the Anki website. If this is the case, please remove such add-on through the Tools > Add-ons menu in Anki. Once you complete the removal process, you can download and install our offical add-on which you can find here.
If the problem persists, try resetting your AMBOSS account password here. Should you need further asstiance, please send us a message via the Support button.
The add-on stopped working after the update
Anki should always be restarted after the add-on update. If you notice that the add-on is behaving strangely after you updated it, please remove the add-on via the Tools > Add-ons menu within Anki.
Now, you can re-download the newest version of the add-on from our official website, and install it again. If this solution did not help, please send us a message via the Support button.
If you see a UTF-8 error when trying to import an existing deck into Anki
This error is directly linked to the Anki platform. Sometimes, certain files (e.g.: spreadsheet CVS files) aren't saved with the correct encoding. Anki requires the file to be saved with the UTF-8 encoding to be successfully imported. You can reach out directly to Anki Support forums for assistance with this issue.
If you see a UTF-8 error during installation
You will need to ensure the add-on is correctly installed directly through Anki. Please follow the steps for installing following a UTF-8 error in our Installation Troubleshooting article.
The add-on can't connect to the AMBOSS server
You may see this error message when the add-on can't connect with our server while trying to pull up the Article summary from our webpage. You can try these troubleshooting steps to address the issue:
* make sure you have a stable internet connection
* re-log to your AMBOSS account within Anki, you can click on AMBOSS > Log out... You can log in again via the same menu
* check if you can use our webpage without any issues

Some information shown in the pop-up is incorrect
We always do our best to keep our medical content up to date and content is regularly reviewed by physicians. However, changes happen quickly and sometimes mistakes can happen too. If you think that there is a mistake, open the linked article and leave feedback to our medical editors, they'll review it and get right back to you. In the image below, you'll see our feedback button is highlighted in yellow. You will find this button in each section of our articles!
Some phrases in my flashcards aren't highlighted
We are always working on improving the phrase matching algorithm, but there may be occasions when some phrases or keywords are not correctly identified by the AMBOSS add-on. Some simple checks to make are: is your term spelled correctly (in US English)? Is your add-on updated to the most recent version, including the most recent version of Anki?
If your add-on is working correctly, but some of the phrases in your flashcards are not linked to the AMBOSS Knowledge Library (you can't see the pop-up with the definition) please let us know! You can do that by pressing the Support button visible on the bottom of this page. Please include the term you were expecting and a screenshot of your flashcard.
Why can't I see all images that I would normally see in the Library?
The images you see when using the AMBOSS Anki add-on have been selected by our medical editors as the most relevant images for the clinical topic identified.
You may not be able to view all the images you may ordinarily see in our Library, or access all the additional features of our images (for example quizzes, image overlays and annotations) in our Anki add-on. You can, however, still get the full experience by visiting our Library. If you like seeing our images in the Anki add-on and would like to see more images and features, keep using them, and recommend them to your friends! The more this feature is used, the more we will add in the future!
Please note that currently, it is not possible to disable images.
