Physicians who search for a clinical question on AMBOSS and read a CME-eligible article to find an answer will be able to effortlessly redeem those searches for CME credits using this new tool.
Can every article on AMBOSS be counted for an Internet Searching and Learning (also known as Internet Point of Care) CME activity?
We hope that one day, all articles for clinicians will be eligible for CME credit. However, at the moment, only the articles listed in our CME library will be eligible for CME credit. This means if you search for a term that brings you to one of these articles, and use the information in that article to answer a clinical question, you can receive credit for that search.
How can I redeem credit for the articles I’ve read?
You can access your CME activity as follows:
- Look for the CME widget on your AMBOSS dashboard. You will need to fill out your personal information by following the "Go to CME Credits" link.
- Under your profile, you will see three tabs. In the “For review” tab, you will see a list of the searches on AMBOSS that brought you to a CME-eligible article, with the date of the search.
If you read the information in the article to try to answer your clinical question, click “Review for 0.5 credits.” - A pop-up box will appear with two questions about the goal and the result of your search. Answer the questions, click “Add”, and the search entry will disappear from the list in the “For review” tab and will appear in the “To claim” tab, with the date that you reviewed it. There, you can click as many searches at one time as you wish to claim, and click “Claim credits” at the bottom right.
Before clicking “Claim credits”, please make sure that all of your profile information is correct.
- The search entry will then disappear from the list in the “To claim” tab and will appear in the "Claimed" tab, with the date that it was claimed. You will see one of the following tags on the search entry:
- Submitted, if the credit was successfully submitted to the board listed in your profile
- Rejected, if the credit was unsuccessfully submitted to the board listed in your profile
- Not submitted, if there was no board listed in your profile.
You will also see an option to download a PDF that certifies your credit.
What can I do if my submission says “Rejected?”

In the tool, only some boards or state licensing organizations are in the drop-down. What about physicians who belong to other boards/organizations?
The organizations in the drop-down are the ones that collaborate with ACCME for “direct credit reporting.” This means that when a physician submits credits through our tool, those credits will be automatically submitted to ACCME, who in turn will submit them to the correct organization. If you belong to an organization not listed there, you will need to download the PDF certificate from the tool and provide that to your organization.
Can you redeem credit twice for reading the same article?
Yes. The credit is given based on the searching and learning activity. So if you search for one question about e.g.: heart failure in the morning, and another question about heart failure in the afternoon, you would get 0.5 credits for each search.
Can AMBOSS award CME credit to physicians based outside the United States?
We are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), which is a US-based organization. This accreditation allows us to award AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ to any physician who completes one of our Internet Searching and Learning (or Internet Point of Care) CME activities, regardless of the physician’s location or nationality. US physicians can use these credits to fulfill some (or even all) of their CME requirements with US medical licensing boards or specialty boards. However, non-US physicians will need to check with the board in their country to determine if these credits would fulfill their requirements.
What are some examples of countries where non-US physicians could use CME credit earned through AMBOSS to fulfill their CME requirements?
In Canada, CME credit earned through any Internet Searching and Learning (Internet Point of Care) activity would fulfill the requirements for “Section 2 Self Learning Credit” for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
In Europe, many countries will allow a 1:1 conversion between AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ and European CME credit (called “ECMEC”).
Can other clinicians (e.g., physician assistants, nurse practitioners) receive CME credit from AMBOSS?
Currently, we are only accredited to award AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™, which can only be awarded to physicians. We hope in the future to be able to extend our CME credit program to other clinicians as well.
